The University of Iowa is a comprehensive public university committed to high-quality teaching, research, and service. Founded in 1847 in Iowa City, Iowa, as the state's first public institution of higher learning, the University enrolls more than 30,500 students and offers several top-ranking programs. The University’s budgeted revenues and expenses for FY09 are $2.4 billion, with $386 million in grants, gifts, and contracts for research, development, education, and service. The UI Research Foundation filed 109 patent applications for inventions in FY08 and earned more than $23 million in license revenue. The UI is playing a leadership role in helping advance the field of wind energy in the State of Iowa through IAWIND, an organization that combines the efforts of the universities, community colleges, wind industry and state agencies.
