Alliance History
In 2005, the University of Houston initiated an effort to bring about collaboration among industry, academia and government to focus on the development of wind infrastructure, technology, and workforce, in Texas. This collaboration was called “The Lone Star Wind Alliance.” In 2008, a memorandum of understanding was signed by 30 prominent stakeholders within the wind industry supporting the creation of an operating entity to drive this initiative. As part of this initiative, it was agreed that the University of Houston would serve as General Manager and undertake to form a 501c3 to carry out the operations of the Alliance. To further these goals, John D. White was recently hired by the University of Houston as the new entity’s Managing Director. Following the 2008 elections, the Obama administration has focused on renewables as a critical component of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan and its associated Economic Stimulus Package. The President’s national goal of having renewable energy sources meeting 25% of the Nation’s energy needs by 2030 has enormous ramifications and will create many opportunities throughout the United States. Recognizing this, the new operating entity naturally evolved into “The Wind Alliance” (the Alliance), where the efforts and resources within all twelve wind-corridor states can be focused on industry-wide operational goals.
